What is a 2FA security key and why do I need it for Duo?
Information on security keys for students, faculty, and staff across CSU campuses. Applicable to: Fort Collins, Pueblo, Spur, System Affiliation: Students, Faculty, Staff Description This guide provides essential information about security keys at CSU. Security keys enhance account protection by providing two-factor authentication (2FA) and reducing the risk of unauthorized access. Features What is a security key? A two-factor authentication (2FA) security key is a physical device designed to strengthen account security by pairing a password (something you know) with a physical key (something you have) during the login process. To use it, you plug the key into a USB port, tap the contact when prompted, and you will access your account. The key generates a unique cryptographic response to verify your identity, making it highly effective against phishing and other online threats. It supports widely adopted FIDO standards, works across multiple platforms, and functions offline without needing batteries or charging, ensuring reliability and ease of use. Do I need a security key for Duo 2FA? If you prefer not to use the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone or do not have access to a smartphone, you will need to use a hardware security key for two-factor authentication. Security keys are physical devices that provide an additional layer of security by verifying your identity during the login process. Security keys work by generating a unique code or using protocols like FIDO (Fast Identity Online) to authenticate access when plugged into a computer or used via NFC. To use a security key with Duo, ensure the key meets the necessary specifications, such as compatibility with Duo's security protocols and your device's operating system. Why is Duo Mobile not in my device's language?
Devices running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 may display the Duo Mobile app and Duo Mobile push notifications in a language other than your device's language, typically German. This is a problem with iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, and can only be fixed by updating the device to at least iOS 16 or iPadOS 16. If the affected device cannot be updated beyond iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, this issue cannot be fixed. Additionally, the Duo Mobile app will no longer support iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 after February 17, 2025. The Duo Mobile app will continue to function on iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 devices on which it is already installed, but it will no longer receive security updates or technical support and will not be available in the App Store.
