Set or change a preferred name
Control How Your Name Appears at CSU
CSU allows you to set a preferred first name (or nickname). CSU Fort Collins faculty and staff also have the option to set a preferred last name (or professional last name). These names may be different from your legal name.
This choice helps ensure your preferred identity is used throughout the university. When you set your preferred first name (and preferred last name, if applicable) via the NetID website, it will immediately begin appearing in most major systems, including:
Applicable to:
- CSU System, Fort Collins, Pueblo, Spur
- applicants, students, staff, faculty, associates, retirees, emeritus
Prerequisites
- You must have an active NetID in order to make changes to your record.
- A campus IP address or VPN Connection is required for some actions.
- Review Change My Information: Name Preferences.
- Preferred names must be appropriate for use in University records.
- Inappropriate names may be removed, and serious violations may be referred to legal counsel.
- Notes about pronunciation of the preferred name will be removed.
How to change your preferred first name in CSU systems
- After logging in to the NetID website, select Menu > My Account > Preferred First Name.

Update your preferred first name and click Save.
- Preferred first name must start with a capital letter and contain only these characters: A-Z a-z - . ' space.

CSU Pueblo users: Also contact your administrative office to have your preferred name set.

CSU Fort Collins Students: Use RAMweb. Former students with an inactive NetID must use RAMrecords. See The Hub for Student Services for instructions.

Faculty, Staff and Associates: Contact your hiring/onboarding departmental Human Resources representative.
Email Alias Names

Your email alias will not update automatically after you change your name (legal, preferred, or professional).
- Once your preferred or legal last name is changed in RAMweb, RAMrecords, or Human Resources systems, your new last name will appear as an option in the NetID website.
- To update your email alias, go to Menu > My Account > Email Alias.
