Explore the Courses Tab in Blackboard Ultra Base Navigation (Instructors)
Contents The following support article provides information for instructors on navigating the Courses tab of Ultra Base Navigation to find and organize courses for instructors. Features include marking courses as Favorites, using the Hide and Show features, finding Hidden courses, and finding courses assigned to Terms. Favoriting a Course Hide a Course Find a Hidden Course Search the Course Catalog Find Courses in Terms Frequently Asked Questions Courses Features Courses listed in the Courses tab of Ultra Base Navigation are automatically listed in alphabetical order. This order cannot be changed or rearranged, however instructors can use the Favorite function to move current and important courses to the top of the course list. Instructors can also use the Hide and Show functions to remove or add courses from their course list. These courses must be removed from the Hidden from Me list in order for them to become searchable. Instructors can use the Course Catalog to see all of the courses they are enrolled in as an instructor or search for other courses. The Terms feature allows courses from previous semesters to be organized into groups and searched through a filter so only one term displays. The last three years of courses can be found in the terms filter list. Mark Courses as Favorites Marking a course as a favorite in the Courses tab will move it to the top of the course list under a section labeled Favorites. This makes current or frequently opened courses easier to find and access. Courses can be marked as favorites from either the list or tile view of the course by clicking the star icon. If a course is marked as a favorite, this icon will be purple. By clicking the star icon a second time, the course will be unmarked as a favorite and will move down into the list of courses by tern in alphabetical order. Hide/Show Courses Courses can be hidden from the full course list and unhidden from the Hidden from me course list if the user is enrolled in the course as an instructor. This capability is not available for courses in which the user is registered as a student. Hiding a course will not hide it from enrolled students, it will only hide it from the instructor’s view. Hide a Course Instructors can hide courses by clicking the ellipsis (1) in the course box or tile, and selecting the option for Hide course (2). This moves the course to a separate course list called Hidden from me. Find Hidden Courses Once a course has been hidden, it will be moved to a separate course list. To see the list of hidden courses, click the Filter drop-down menu (1) and select the option for Hidden from me (2). This will display the list of courses that have been hidden by the instructor. Show Hidden Courses To unhide a hidden course, access the Hidden Courses list (1). After finding the course to unhide, click the ellipsis in the course box and select the option for Show course (2). This will move the course back to the list of all courses. Be sure to change the filter option back to All courses to see the courses that have been unhidden. Search in the Course Catalog To see a more comprehensive list of the courses an instructor is enrolled in (including the children of merged courses), the Course Catalog can be a useful tool. In the Courses tab in Base Navigation, the Course Catalog can be accessed in the upper-right corner. From here, instructors can search for Courses by switching the option to Instructor (1) and entering your NetID in the search field (2). This will display the list of courses in which that user is enrolled as an instructor. NOTE: Using the Course Catalog can be particularly useful for instructors that want to see the status of their child courses, which are not visible in the courses tab. Find Courses Assigned to Terms Courses in a semester are assigned a specific Term in Blackboard to keep courses organized by start/end dates and semester. To view only the courses assigned to a specific term, click the drop-down arrow in the Terms box and select a term from the list that appears. Selecting one of these terms will display the relevant courses from only that semester. To view all courses again, access the Terms box and select the option for All Terms. To adjust the dates of a course assigned to a term, please take a look at this support article on Changing the Availability of Courses Assigned to Terms. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Why can’t I find a course I taught in Blackboard from more than three years ago? Answer: Only the last three years of courses are retained in Blackboard. Courses older than three years are archived to storage devices and removed from Blackboard every summer. Q: How can I access a course I taught in Blackboard from more than three years ago? Answer: To retrieve a course that has been archived and removed from Blackboard, submit a ticket to the Help Desk with the CRN and semester of the course you are looking for. If the course exists, it will be temporarily restored so that content can be retrieved, copied forward, and/or exported and saved by the instructor. Q: How can I save a copy of my older courses before they are removed from Blackboard? Answer: Instructors have the ability to archive and export a zip file of any of the courses for which they are listed as an instructor. These zip files can be uploaded into other templates or courses when needed to review and copy forward content. This support article has more information on exporting and archiving courses. Q: How can I see my parent and child courses, or see if any of my courses have been merged? Answer: To find courses that have been merged into a parent/child relationship in Blackboard, search for courses in the Course Catalog (see instructions above) or look in the Grade Center of the parent course. If a course has any child courses associated with it, there will be a column in the grade center labeled CHILD COURSE ID. Any student with a value in this column are enrolled in the child course. Q: Why do I still see courses from previous semesters in my Current Courses? Answer: If courses from previous semesters are visible in the Current Courses list, this is because they have not yet been assigned to a Term. As an instructor, if the previous courses displaying is bothersome, it is recommended that instructors use the Favorite and Hide Course features to organize their course list. Q: How can I grant access to a student completing an INCOMPLETE in a course that has been assigned to a term and is not available? Answer: To grant access to a course for only one student who is completing an INCOMPLETE in a course, submit a support ticket to the Help Desk with the CRN and semester of the course the student needs access to, and the anticipated end date of that student’s access. The student will then be granted access to the course until that date. Export or Archive Blackboard Original Courses
Contents The following support article provides information for instructors on exporting or archiving their course content from Blackboard as a packaged zip file that can be saved to a personal or work device for future reference. Archive Versus Export Archive/Export Video Walkthrough Find the Export/Archive Option Export a Course Archive a Course Why Archive or Export A Course? Saves a copy of the course for your records and reference as an instructor Ensures that a backup version of the course exists for instructor use after the course reaches its three-year expiration date and is removed from Blackboard Retains course information that can be uploaded into future Blackboard courses with the import function Allows for sharing of course content packages between users NOTE: Do NOT unzip an export package or delete files from the package once it has been downloaded to your device, as this will cause errors when importing the package. Archive or Export While both the archive and export functions in Blackboard both create a zip file of your course content, only the archive function allows all content including user information like discussion posts/replies and grades to be recorded. Before choosing either archive or export, ask yourself why you are creating the backed-up version of the course. Will you use the file for any form of reporting requiring user information in the future? Select Archive. Will you only be using the file to upload course content into a new shell without any previous user data? Select Export. Video Walkthrough – Export or Archive a Course This recording from Academic Technology at CSU Pueblo describes the process of exporting or archiving a course in the Blackboard Original Course View. Find Courses Assigned to Terms in Blackboard Ultra Base Navigation
The following support article provides information to assist Blackboard users on finding courses from previous semesters that have been assigned to terms in Blackboard’s Ultra Base Navigation. Course Terms in Blackboard To ensure proper storage capacity is retained for upcoming semesters, only the last three years of course are retained in Blackboard. Older courses are removed on an annual basis to gain storage space for the next academic year. Course within the last three years are assigned to terms and made unavailable to students once a semester has ended. Terms are constructed based on the course type and the duration of the course according to CSU Pueblo's academic calendar. Finding Courses Assigned to Terms In Blackboard’s Ultra Base Navigation, terms can be accessed from the Courses tab. From the Courses tab, users have the option to search for a specific course, use a filter for courses, or view the list of available terms in the Terms list Clicking the drop-down arrow in the Terms box will display a list of the terms that courses the user is enrolled in have been assigned to Selecting a term from this list will limit the visible courses to those that have only been assigned to the selected term NOTE: If you still don’t see a course from a semester that should be assigned to a specific term, check the filter option in the term for hidden courses. If you previously hid a course, it will still be marked as hidden in the term it was assigned to. Term Naming Conventions Terms are usually named according to the year, semester, and course type to accommodate different course durations. These naming conventions are similar to how course IDs are structured in Blackboard. Courses with a 0 after the semester are resident instruction courses that may be in-person, online, or in a hybrid format Courses with a 1 after the semester are Independent Study courses offered through the Division of Extended Studies Courses with a 2 after the semester are from the Online Program offered through the Division of Extended Studies Where duration of courses allows, some categories of courses have been combined into one term to cut down on the amount of terms. For example: 23SUMMER02 currently contains resident instruction and online Extended Studies courses from the summer 2023 semester. Changing the Availability of Courses Assigned to Terms If a course assigned to an unavailable term needs to be made available again, for example when a student completing an incomplete needs access to a course from a prior semester, the course duration needs to be changed by the instructor(s). NOTE: If a course has been assigned to a term, clicking the lock icon to toggle availability of the course off and on will not make the course available to the student. Here is a video walkthrough of how instructors can adjust the availability of courses assigned to courses for both the Original and Ultra Blackboard course views: NOTE: After changing the duration, don’t forget to also check the availability of the course by clicking the lock icon if it is red. Explore the Courses Tab in Blackboard Ultra Base Navigation (Students)
The following support article provides information for students on navigating the Courses tab of Ultra Base Navigation to find and organize courses including marking courses as Favorites and what Private courses mean. Mark Courses as Favorites Marking a course as a favorite in the Courses tab will move it to the top of the course list under a section labeled Favorites. This makes courses from the current semester easier to find or courses that are frequently opened more accessible. NOTE: It is recommended that at the start of a new semester, students un-favorite all of the courses from the previous semester and favorite the new courses. Courses can be marked as favorites from either the list or tile view of the course by clicking the star icon. If a course is marked as a favorite, this icon will be purple. By clicking the star icon a second time, the course will be unmarked as a favorite and will move down into the list their assigned term and in alphabetical order: Private Courses If a course is marked with a lock icon and labelled “Private,” students will not be able to access the course. When a private course is clicked by a student, they will receive an error message stating that “You can’t access this course right now. Your instructor will allow access when the course is ready. Please try again later.” If you cannot access a course you believe you should have access to, please contact your instructor. Here are the three common reasons why “Private” courses may be displaying in the Courses tab: The semester for the course has not started yet. If the semester has not started yet, students will not have access to the course. If the semester has started and the course is still not available, please contact the instructor of the course. The instructor is updating or working on the course. An instructor can mark a course as unavailable temporarily if content in the course needs to be updated without affecting work being submitted in the course. If the course has become unavailable without communication from the instructor, please contact the instructor of the course. The semester for the course is over. Courses remain available to students for a limited time after a semester has been completed. If a course from a previous semester is marked as Private, it is because it is no longer available to students. View Courses Assigned to a Term Courses are assigned to terms on a regular basis to organize them with the correct year and course type. NOTE: Courses from the last three years are retained in Blackboard, with the oldest year of courses being archived and removed from Blackboard each summer. From the Courses tab, users have the option to search for a specific course, use a filter for courses, or view the list of available terms in the Terms list Clicking the drop-down arrow in the Terms box will display a list of the terms that courses the user is enrolled in have been assigned to Selecting a term from this list will limit the visible courses to those that have only been assigned to the selected term Frequently Asked Questions Why can’t I find a course I attended in Blackboard from more than three years ago? Answer: CSU Pueblo only retains the last three years of courses in Blackboard to save storage space for the next next academic year's courses. Courses older than three years are archived to storage devices and removed from Blackboard every summer. If you need access to a deleted course, please reach out to the course instructor. Why do I still see courses from semesters in my Others course list? Answer: If courses from a specific semester are visible in the Others course list, it is because they have not yet been assigned to a Term. You can let us know that a course has not been assigned to a term by submitting a support ticket. Please use the Favorite option to keep current courses at the top of your course list in Blackboard.
