Connecting to the Data Warehouse (ODS)
Connecting to the Data Warehouse (ODS) on a Windows computer enables you to use Data Warehouse data in your desktop applications (Excel, MS Access, Power BI Desktop, etc.).
1. To connect to the ODS on a Windows computer, you’ll need to install a compatible version of Oracle InstantClient. The InstantClient is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
2. You'll need the 'bit' version that matches your applications. Most applications are 64-bit so if you're unsure, start there.
3. You'll also need a configuration file, TNSNAMES.ora file. Your Helpdesk team can help with the software installation and getting the TNSNAMES.ora file from the Division of IT.
Windows install links
Windows 32 bit client -> Instant Client for Windows 32-bit
Windows 64 bit client -> Instant Client for Microsoft Windows (x64) 64-bit
Once you have Obtained the TNSNAMES.ora file from the Help desk you can insert that file into the following pathway
- Find where you downloaded the Oracle Client, For me it was in my D drive
- Then double click app > client > NETID -> product -> Version type for me it is 12.1.0 -> client1 -> Scroll down to Network -> Then select Admin This is where you paste the TNSNAMES File
Once installed, you can create an ODBC connection to the ODS database. Instructions from Microsoft are available with the link below.
How to make an ODBC connection
Here I made the ODSPROD connection. The Data Source Name and Description is for your reference. The TNS Service name should be odsprod.world
