Microsoft OS activation for CSU-owned computers
For CSU-owned computers, the preferred and default activation method is KMS. KMS works well for computers that will be connected to the campus network (either physically on campus or through VPN) at least once every 180 days. For systems that will not be connected to the CSU network, MAK is a more appropriate option. MAK keys can be obtained from the RAMtech Store.

Prerequisites
Before activating a Microsoft operating system using KMS, ensure the following:
- The computer is connected to the CSU network (physically or via VPN).
- The operating system installation media was acquired from the CSU RAMtech Store.
- The computer is joined to one of CSU's campus Active Directory domains (verify with your local IT support if unsure).
If the computer is not joined to an Active Directory domain, follow the manual KMS activation instructions below.
KMS Activation of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2022
By default, these operating systems will activate automatically through CSU’s KMS servers as long as the prerequisites are met.
If automatic activation does not occur, follow these steps to manually activate the system:
-
Connect to the CSU campus network (physically or via VPN).
-
Open an Administrative Command Prompt:
- Type cmd.exe in the Start menu search box.
-
Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
- At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter:
cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /skms ms-kms-1.colostate.edu
- Next, type the following command and press Enter:
cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
-
Verify the activation status. The second command should output a message like "Product activated successfully" (actual wording may vary by operating system).
KMS Troubleshooting Tips
If you encounter issues during activation, review the following troubleshooting steps:
-
Time synchronization: KMS activation requires the local computer’s time and date to match the KMS server's time. Ensure that your computer's time and date settings are accurate.
-
Administrator access: You must be an administrator on the computer to perform the activation. If you are not, contact your local IT support personnel.
-
Reconnect to the network: KMS activation requires connecting to CSU's network at least once every 180 days to remain active. After initial activation, this process happens automatically without the need for manual steps.
