Shibboleth Service Provider - Update Shibboleth Version (IIS)

Description


Use this guide in addition to the official Release Notes, where Shibboleth announces updates, to perform Service Provider (SP) updates on a Windows server (IIS). Notifications of a new version is also emailed to announce@shibboleth.net. The OS used to develop this guide:

  • Windows 2022 (IIS)


Shibboleth Service Provider - About


To update the Service Provider, you'll have a snapshot taken of your machine, back up your current configuration files, run the installer for the new version, restart and test your Service Provider.



Instructions

  1. Before beginning the update, take a snapshot of your machine.
    1. (IAM specifically- one business day before your scheduled update, email vmhelp@colostate.edu to request the snapshot be taken before your update). Other departments, contact your server manager responsible for performing system snapshots.
      1. Include the machine name (e.g. shibspwintest.acns.colostate.edu) 
    2. Download the new version of the Shibboleth Service Provider from the Shibboleth Software Repository
      1. Open the Win64/Win32 folder that matches your system
        1. E.g. for shibspwintest.acns.colostate.edu, win64 > -win64.msi installer
      2. Download the shibboleth-sp-<version>.msi file
      3. Copy/move the shibboleth-sp-<version>.msi file onto your server
    3. In your server, double-click your shibboleth-sp-<version>.msi file to run the installer
      1. Click Next at the Welcome to the Shibboleth... setup screen
      2. Click Next at the Update Shibboleth setup screen
      3. Click Install at the Ready to install Shibboleth Service Provider setup screen
      4. When prompted, close Shibboleth 
    4. After the installer is finished, test your Service Provider
      1. If your Service Provider isn't functional, use your snapshot to revert to your previous configuration.


Additional Tips:

  1. To see your current version of the Shibboleth Service Provider:
    1. In file explorer, navigate to c:\opt\shibboleth-sp\sbin
    2. Type cmd in the filepath entry bar and press Enter to open the Command prompt in this location
    3. Enter the command shibd -version to see your current version of the Shibboleth Service Provider
